First Day Information, Rules, and SLOs

Book:  You don't need to buy a book; however, you must a buy a three-ring binder (页夹, capeta, скоросшиватель) and bring it every day. Put your handouts in it.     
Tests:  Level 4 students must take the Oral Exit (=speaking test) on Wednesday, May 1.
Punctuality*:  * , puntualidad, пунктуальность  You must come to class on time. If you must leave early, tell me at the beginning of class, not when you are leaving.
Seating and pair/group work:  You must sit where I tell you to sit; you may not always sit with your friends. It is best if you sit with a student who doesn't speak your language. You may not just work alone.
Cell phones, music, and videos:  Turn off your phone or put it on 'vibrate' (颤动, vibrar, вибри́ровать). Do not answer your phone in class. Leave the room and talk in the hall. You may not make video recordings in class.
Respect others!!         
In our class, you must respect ( , respetar, уважать) and work with students who are different from you. Some students come from different countries and cultures (文化, culturas, культура). Some students have different sexual orientations (性取向, orientaciones sexuales, Сексуальная ориентация). Some are older or younger than you, and some have handicaps (残疾的, minusválidos, физическая неполноценность). If you make fun of (嘲笑,嘲弄, burlarse de, издеваться) or insult (辱骂, insultar/injuriar, оскорблять) other students, I may ask you to leave class. City College may expel you (开除, 把…除名, expulsar, исключать) if you continue. If a student is harassing (不断打扰, acosar, изводить) you, you must tell me so I can help you.

In this class, you will:
1.  Communicate. Use English to say what you need to say so (..., para que, что́бы) other people will understand you—even if (即使, aun si, да́же е́сли) your grammar isn't perfect.  
2.  Learn and practice new vocabulary about everyday (日常的, cotidiana, повседневный) life, such as:
     a.  housing
     b.  health care: illness (, 疾病, enfermedad, боле́знь), parts of the body, making an appointment
     d.  school: phrases in class, saying you will be absent, using the library, asking where things are
     e.  accidents and emergencies:  9-1-1, fire, going to the emergency room
     f.   job interview questions
     g.  transportation: riding Muni and BART
     h.  personal description (描述, descripción, описание): She is tall. She has curly black hair. She is nice.
     i.   shopping: trying on and buying clothes, exchanging, returning
3.  Understand people when they speak about everyday life.
4.  Use correct grammar to write and talk about everyday life (e.g., how to ask questions and make negative sentences).
5.  Read and understand simple stories and information.
6.  Practice pronunciation by speaking and listening to others.
7.  Practice taking and leaving phone messages.
8.  Learn how to ask and say the meaning of words
9.  Practice answering questions for the Level 4 Oral Exit (=Speaking Test).
